A Holter monitor is a portable, battery-operated EKG unit that the patient wears continuously. The device monitors the electrical activity of the heart (the ECG or EKG).

The monitor is connected to the patient by placing electrodes onto the chest and connecting wires from a small recording device to the electrodes. It records over a defined time period, usually 24 hours.
