Transesophageal Echocardiography

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a test that doctors use to look closely at the heart. An ultrasound is used to examine and take detailed photos of the structures of the heart. To place the ultrasound next to the heart, doctors place a transducer into the esophagus and "snake" it down until it lies adjacent to the cardiac muscle. Due to the discomfort of the test, sedation is usually required.
